Psalm 58

Written By: carolmoye - Jul• 17•13

I am working on Volume II of my book. As I prepare to write each Psalm reflection, I first read that Psalm, then put it away. After some time passes (could be an hour, could be a day, could be several days), I reread, then follow that with reading a commentary to see what the biblical scholars say. I take notes on what the theme is, or the most important points in that particular psalm, then I usually step away again. Some I write in a day, some over a period of weeks. Psalm 58 is one that is taking me on a journey of several weeks. It’s been a fascinating couple of weeks in terms of national news that relates to that particular psalm. On my first read, it was clearly about the Supreme Court decision to overturn the Civil Rights Voting Act. After reading the commentary about a week later, the House voted to remove food stamp funding from the farm bill. That certainly seemed to fit the message of that psalm. I wrote a poem related, but wasn’t quite sure that was it. I reread it the same day that the jury acquitted Zimmerman for the killing of Trayvon Martin, sparking protest nationwide, many people speaking of God’s ultimate justice in the matter. Again, Psalm 58 seemed to speak to that as well. I am glad I delayed writing it. Funny how so many big events in the news happened while I was working on this one. If you haven’t read it, please do. Love to hear what you take from it.
